The Bottom Line

Department of Business and Professional Regulation

Dear Friends,

The business of auctioneering has been around for hundreds of years. With over a thousand auctioneers and 300 auctioneering businesses currently licensed in Florida, this industry is sure to be around for many more. The Florida Board of Auctioneers is responsible for licensing and regulating auctioneers. During its regular meetings, the board also considers applications, reviews disciplinary cases and conducts informal hearings.

When looking to hire an auctioneer or attending an auction, it is important to be wary of potential unlicensed activity. Auctioneers are required to include their license number in any advertising and display their licenses at the site of the auction. You can verify the license for an individual or their business by visiting our web page. Reputable auctioneers and companies will be happy to provide this license information and references of former customers.

If you suffer a financial loss as the result of an auction conducted by a licensed auctioneer, you may qualify for relief from the Auctioneer Recovery Fund. This fund was created to provide restitution for individuals who were harmed financially by a licensed auctioneer. One of our main duties at DBPR is to protect Florida consumers and I am proud to offer this avenue to those who have been hurt by a licensed auctioneer. To see if you qualify, visit http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/pro/auct/ for more information on the fund’s requirements.

Up to date information about the board and auctioneer licensing can be found at http://www.myfloridalicense.com. I encourage you to visit our site not only to verify a license but to also report any cases of unlicensed activity. By reporting this illegal activity, you can help us protect consumers who conduct business with licensed, responsible auctioneers.

Sincerely,
