Applying for
Elevator Professional Licensing
The bureau registers elevator companies and certified elevator technicians, and issues two professional credentials: Certified Elevator Inspector and Certificate of Competency. Florida law requires elevator workers and elevator companies to register with and/or obtain a license from the bureau before performing any work. Florida law also requires permits for installing, altering, relocating, and operating elevators.
Additional information regarding professional credentials is available in our Frequently Asked Questions.
Before the bureau may accept a registration or issue a credential, applicants must complete the following:
1. Proof of General Liability Insurance
Obtain general liability insurance in a minimum amount of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence. All elevator companies, elevator inspectors, and independent elevator technicians must have insurance as described above. Proof of insurance must be provided to the bureau with the application.
2. Complete requirements for type of license required.
- Registered Elevator Company
- Certificate of Competency and Certified Elevator Technician
- Certified Elevator Inspector
3. Submit Application and Fees
Send the completed application, all required documentation, and the $50 fee (Certificate of Competency only) to:

4. Continuing Education
Each Certificate of Competency, Certified Elevator Technician and Certified Elevator Inspector must complete eight hours of continuing education to be eligible for annual renewal. The continuing education must be completed within the current year and submitted to the bureau.
5. Annual Renewal
All registrations and licenses expire on December 31 each year and must be renewed annually. The bureau mails renewal notices to the address the bureau has on record. The registrant and/or licensee must notify the bureau of an address change. The renewal notice, and the $50 fee for a Certificate of Competency, must be returned to the bureau by December 31 to renew your license or registration. To avoid a delay in your renewal, it is strongly recommended that you submit your renewal as early as possible.
