DBPR Bottom Line: Fast Facts for Florida Business Leaders

January 14, 2011

Dear Friends,

This year, DBPR's top priority will be getting Florida back to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, and we are looking for ways to do better, be faster, and work more efficiently than ever before. I'm fond of saying to the people who work here how important it is to remember that the completed license applications we receive are much more than just application forms needing to be processed; that every one of these application packets represents an entrepreneur's dream of a new career, starting a new business - basically a dream of a better life for themselves and their family. I want our staff to know how excited these applicants are to receive a response from us, and how tough it is to find your mailbox empty when you are expectantly awaiting something! I want to convey how important it is when a Florida entrepreneur wants to start working on his or her dream, or when a business person wants to get a license to keep their dream alive, that our Department be right there to help in any way possible, from processing applications instantly to providing accurate answers to questions someone may have.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was to find out yesterday that we have reached a new milestone in how quickly we are able to process the applications for professional and business licenses. I had gone down to our central processing unit to let the staff know how impressed members of our Legislative oversight committee were on learning that we had accelerated our license processing times from an average of 70 days to about eight days. Joseph Dean, the manager of all of our processing teams, told me that we are now processing applications at an average of about three days and often completed the processing the same day the application was received! This improvement is spectacular, particularly since our inflow of applications has remained relatively constant over the past three years, meaning that the improvement is a direct result of modernization of our processes and the efforts of our processing staff.

We know that as our economy continues to improve, the volume of incoming applications will begin to rise. We are therefore developing new improvements in order to maintain our speed as the flow of work increases.

It's also important that we hear from you – Florida's businesses and professionals – about areas in which we need more improvement, or ideas you have that would help us serve you better and faster. Over the coming weeks and months, we'll keep working hard to help make Florida the best place in the nation to do business.

Sincerely,

Charlie Liem's Signature
