Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Governor, I would like to thank you for your support of Amendment 1. The Governor made a commitment to the people of Florida that he would lower their property taxes, and your vote Tuesday means not only that your property tax burden will be lighter but also that our economy will get a much-needed stimulus.

Right on the heels of the election, the Governor rolled out his 2008/09 budget proposals. Included in his recommendations to the legislature is significant funding to help us improve the way we serve you. For more information on his budget recommendations, visit www.thepeoplesbudget.state.fl.us/ or www.flgov.com.

Last week I joined our Landscape Architect Board in Orlando for their regular board meeting. This Board is the first of our professional boards to join us in our commitment to streamline our forms and clarify our rules in order to improve the licensure process. We’ll be rolling out more about that in the weeks ahead, but their leadership has made a great difference.

From there I traveled to Plant City where I visited Palm Harbor Homes. Palm Harbor Homes manufactures modular housing and typically builds between 1,400 and 1,700 homes per year. Mike Draper took us on a tour around the plant and showed us the various stages of building a home. Because of their highly-engineered process, they can build a modular home in approximately 3 days, with 30% less waste at 20 – 30% less cost than a site-built home. They’ve won numerous awards and will soon be showing their new models at the International Builders Show in Orlando.

We then joined Bob Young and Mitch Krach with the Blair Group for a tour of one of their mobile home communities. Our Division of Land Sales, Condominiums and Mobile Homes regulates mobile home communities and ensures that homeowners and developers meet their respective obligations. This community was home to hundreds of residents, many of whom have retired from other parts of the country and enjoy the two golf courses on site. According to Bob, most of the residents start as seasonal residents and then become permanent after 3 years because they enjoy the community and life in Florida.

And finally, I returned to join the Florida Association of Realtors for their annual meeting where they honored the service of our friend Nancy Riley, who was finishing her term as President, and celebrated the incoming President Chuck Bonfiglio, who promises to help jump-start the real estate market. Thanks to the Realtors’ support of Amendment 1, he is off to a good start!

Across the state we touch people who are helping build communities. The landscape architects, mobile home community builders and owners and Realtors are all essential to the growth of Florida.

Sincerely,
Secretary Benson Signature
