Bottom Line head

April 18, 2008

Dear Friends,

At 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, Myra Jowers and her fellow board members were just beginning their long day of hearings, application reviews and other Cosmetology Board business. These dedicated people could have been at home enjoying a lazy Sunday morning or attending to other personal and family affairs, but instead they committed themselves to making their profession the best it can be. Two days later, the Florida Real Estate Commission convened in the morning to take care of their business.

Since Governor Crist appointed me to my current position, I have made a commitment to visit with our boards and commissions. I had the opportunity to do that this past week with the Cosmetology Board and the Florida Real Estate Commission when they met in Orlando. It was an interesting and informative trip for me, and I truly enjoyed watching the cooperative efforts between the boards and the dedicated DBPR staff. It was a pleasure to meet industry members and observe the boards and commissions in action as they dealt with the consequences of unlicensed activity. Also, I introduced our new cosmetology unlicensed activity advertisement, which I shared with you in last weeks Bottom Line.

As many of you know, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation oversees 23 professions that are represented by Governor-appointed boards and commissions. These members give up their free time to ensure that the professionals we regulate are held to the highest standards and provide exemplary service. They are crucial to how our Department functions and how our licensees are servedand, in turn, serve Floridians. Governor Charlie Crist emphasizes the need for dedicated people to serve our state with a servants heart, and I believe our board and commission members at DBPR fit that description.

I look forward to attending all of our professional board and commission meetings during the next several months. I am always available to listen to suggestions you may have on how we can continue to strengthen our practices that serve the more than one million businesses and professionals that we regulate.

I hope to see you soon!

Sincerely,
