Bottom Line head

June 13, 2008

Dear Friends,

We're fortunate to live in a state well known for its beautiful beaches and great tourist destinations. Part of the wonderful experience for tourists - and residents - is dining out and staying in hotels and motels. During the 2008 Legislative Session, the Legislature passed a bill (SB 2016) that enables our Hotels and Restaurants Division to better serve its licensees. Governor Crist signed this bill on May 28. By better serving our licensees, they can, in turn, provide great dining and lodging experiences to visitors and residents. All of these efforts keep our economy thriving.

The bill makes many changes to Chapter 509, Florida Statutes (F.S.), which will increase the Division's efficiency, reduce workload duplication, eliminate unnecessary and outdated requirements, and improve overall safety.

The changes include:

  • Limiting fire safety inspection responsibility to "readily observable" violations, which staff will report to the appropriate fire prevention authority;

  • Reducing the grace period for an individual to obtain food manager certification from 90 days to 30 days after employment;

  • Eliminating the requirement for hotels and restaurants to maintain a copy of Chapter 509, F.S., on the premises; and,

  • Eliminating Department oversight of restrooms by placing restroom requirements, such as the number required and plumbing, with the building code and local authorities. The Division will continue to inspect restrooms for sanitation and safety.
We are excited about the changes made during this session, and thank Governor Crist, the bill sponsors, Senator Dave Aronberg and Representative Chris Dorworth, and the Legislature for their support in making business better. I look forward to providing you with an update of all bills affecting our Department as they are signed. Thank you for all that you do for the economy of our state.

Sincerely,

Chuck Drago
