DBPR Bottom Line: Fast Facts for Florida Business Leaders

July 22, 2011

Dear Friends,

Here at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, we are constantly working to protect Floridians. It's important to not only encourage businesses and professionals to grow and thrive in our state, but also to hold them accountable to the standards of their professions, which serve to protect their customers and other Florida consumers.

Through our Division of Regulation and our General Counsel's Office, we work on a regular basis to enforce the requirements and regulations which apply to Florida businesses and professionals, most often through administrative legal procedures with Florida's professional boards and commissions. The Department receives thousands of complaints on a regular basis and each one is carefully reviewed to determine legal sufficiency and other factors which may determine potential outcomes. For example, out of 541 legally sufficient complaints filed last year relating to community association managers and firms, the Department found probable cause for disciplinary action in 147 complaints and is still actively reviewing 259 complaints.

Because our Department has a strong commitment to transparency and open government, it is important for Floridians, licensees and consumers alike, to have access to our public records. Consumers may at any time request public records from our Department or any one of our divisions, and much of this information is readily available on our website. We'll keep looking for ways to make more information available, and public information that may not be online is always just a phone call or email away.

We encourage our licensees and citizens to give us feedback on our public records process, because transparency is important to Florida's government. We'll keep working to license efficiently and regulate fairly, because that's what is making Florida a great state to do business.

Sincerely,

Ken Lawson
