Dear Friends:

Secretary Drago is enjoying time with his family, and I eagerly accepted his offer to update you on some exciting news for the Division of Certified Public Accounting. There are aspects of our responsibilities that extend past the scope of our central mission to "License Efficiently. Regulate Fairly." As the mother of teenaged and early-20s children, I can certainly appreciate any effort to prepare our children for joining the workforce. Recently, the Division of Certified Public Accounting awarded scholarships that will do just that.

Last week, the division awarded $99,000 in scholarships to 17 students studying to become certified public accountants. The scholarships were awarded through the CPA Education Minority Assistance Program, which was created in 1999 to encourage minorities to enter the profession. We were honored to help these young people on the paths to their careers.

Five dollars from each individual license fee is used to fund the CPA Education Minority Assistance Program. Scholarship applicants can be awarded up to $3,000 per semester for a maximum of two semesters.

I can't think of a better time than "back to school" to remind our children about the many professional opportunities available. I hope you encourage children you know to see what's out there and to keep in-mind that while sometimes school does not seem relevant to their particular interests now, they may soon find that the math, science or shop class they're taking in high school may just provide them the foundation and opportunity to one day become a licensed CPA, Veterinarian, Contractor or anything else their dreams have dreamt. For starters, please visit our Web site and see all the businesses we support.

Sincerely,

Maureen C. Olson
