October 29, 2010 Dear Friends: The Florida v. Georgia football game is a classic rivalry. It's also a classic time when students, alumni and fans gather in Jacksonville for pre- and post-game celebrations. Every year, the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco joins forces with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and University of North Florida Police Department to help keep underage youth safe from the dangers of alcohol consumption. Last year, ABT agents and partners made a record number of arrests with 252 people arrested for the underage possession of alcohol. This year, we'd like to see that number decrease as we hope that underage youth will make the right decision and follow state law. I would like to commend the City of Jacksonville for establishing the "Sideline Student Safety Zones," where fans can go to receive medical help, directions, water, coffee or other help. Anyone can contact the zones by calling 904-630-SAFE (7233). If you have friends or children who will be attending the game, please tell them about these Safety Zones and also remind them that state laws will be enforced. I wish football fans a safe and responsible tailgating experience this weekend. Sincerely, Mike Yaworsky Department of Business and |
