The Bottom Line

Department of Business and Professional Regulation

March 21, 2014

Dear Friends,

It’s a well-known fact that Florida is home to some of the top football schools in the nation, including the 2013 Florida State University National Champions! Beginning this month, National Football League (NFL) scouts and athlete agents will travel to colleges across Florida to watch our players participate in a series of tests and events during the 2014 NFL Pro Days. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) licenses Florida’s athlete agents, and department staff will be attending Florida’s Pro Days to ensure the agents participating are properly licensed by DBPR.

Florida’s college football players are among the best in the nation. It’s no secret that these athletes work hard to get the recognition they deserve, and it’s our job at the department to ensure they have a smooth transition from college athletics to professional sports by reminding them to only work with licensed sports agents.

During the events, staff from the Division of Regulation will be verifying athlete agents’ credentials and educating student athletes and their families on the importance of hiring only licensed athlete agents. Beginning this month, DBPR staff will monitor Pro Day events at the following colleges:

  • University of South Florida, March 10th;
  • University of Florida, March 17th;
  • Florida State University, March 18th;
  • University of Central Florida, March 19th;
  • Bethune-Cookman University, March 20th;
  • University of Miami, April 3rd; and
  • Florida International University, April 4th.

Anyone attempting to recruit student athletes in Florida, regardless of any other state licensure, must have an active, current license through DBPR. There are more than 270 licensed professionals serving as sports agents to Florida’s athletes. I encourage all of Florida’s athletes to verify the license of an individual operating as a sports agent by visiting www.myfloridalicense.com or by calling 850-487-1395.

Sincerely,
