Today is the day many Floridians prepare all year for: the official beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Even before the official beginning of this year’s Hurricane Season, our Northeast Region was struck by Tropical Storm Beryl, which is why it is so important that you prepare your family and your business for the storm season.
Since hurricane damage is often not predictable, businesses are encouraged to store all records, including an inventory of assets, in a watertight container somewhere safe. Additionally, cell or telephone communications may not be readily available following a storm, so it is important that you have predetermined locations for employees to meet when conditions permit.
Also, consumers should be aware that following a storm, unlicensed activity may increase as clean-up begins. To reduce the chances of becoming a victim to an unlicensed scam artist, we encourage consumers to always ask to see the contractor’s State of Florida professional license, verify that license and never pay cash or write checks to an individual, especially when the work is being done through a company. Consumers can verify licenses on our website at www.myfloridalicense.com or by calling 1-850-487-1395. If you suspect that someone is performing unlicensed activity, please call 1-866-532-1440 or email ULA@dbpr.state.fl.us to report it.
As you prepare your family and your business, I encourage you to visit www.FloridaDisaster.org for help developing a disaster preparedness plan. Your preparation efforts will help to ensure your family, home and business are better protected this Hurricane Season!
