Dear Friends,

Here at the Department, we license and regulate a wide range of businesses and professionals throughout Florida. You may not realize that through our Division of Hotels and Restaurants’ Bureau of Elevator Safety, we also license elevators, escalators, the companies that are charged with installing and maintaining these very important pieces of machinery and the private inspectors responsible for ensuring the elevators are kept up to code. With Florida’s approximately 74,000 elevators, escalators and other conveyances making an estimated 1.5 billion passenger trips per year, it is critical to ensure the safe and continued operation of these devices for the safety and comfort of Florida’s residents and visitors.

Through the Bureau’s efforts, I am happy to report that the number of accidents has decreased by 29.5 percent over the past five years even as the number of elevators in the state continues to grow. Next time you are on an elevator or escalator look for the certificate that signifies it has been inspected by our licensees and enjoy the ride!
