DBPR Helps Protect Athletes at College Pro Days
March 20, 2008
Tallahassee- This week, three of Florida’s largest universities hosted Pro Days, where National Football League scouts, athlete agents and coaches were encouraged to come and watch players participate in tests and events. In Florida, athlete agents are licensed and regulated by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (Department), and Department staff was on-hand to ensure that agents participating in the Pro Days were properly licensed and to protect the best interest of the student athletes.
The Department worked three Pro Day events – Tuesday at the University of Florida, Wednesday at Florida State University, and Thursday at the University of Central Florida. Anyone who recruits student athletes in the state of Florida must have an athlete agent license. During the events, staff from the Division of Regulation checked athlete agents’ credentials and educated student athletes and their families on the importance of using a licensed athlete agent.
The Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s mission is to license efficiently and regulate fairly. The Department licenses more than one million businesses and professionals ranging from real estate agents, veterinarians, and accountants to contractors and cosmetologists.
