- Can I change my address online?
Yes. Visit our website at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Renew/Maintain A License. You can also change your telephone number and email address here.
- Your website provides for "main", "mailing", and "location" addresses. What are the differences?Three types of addresses have been established to support your needs: main, license mailing, and license location.
Main Address - This address is the primary address on file.
License Mailing Address - This is the address where the mail associated with a particular license will be sent (if different from the main or license location addresses).
License Location Address - This is the address where the place of business is physically located.
An example of the use of different addresses:
If Jane Doe is a contractor that works for ACME Builders, she may have 3 different addresses listed in her profile. Her main address would be the address of ACME Builders' corporate headquarters. Her license mailing may be her home so she doesn't have to visit the office to pick up her mail. Finally, her license location would be the address of the ACME Builders’ local office where she works. If Jane Doe worked independently, she might have only one address on file (Main Address) as her office is the same place she wishes to receive her mail.
- Can I change all license addresses online?
The main address and license mailing address can be changed online for all license types. License location addresses can also be changed online, except for Barbershops, Cosmetology Salons, Veterinary Establishments, and Talent Agencies. The location for these license types is tied to the license, so a location change will require submission of a new application.
- How can I change my address if I do not have a computer?
You may submit the change in writing or by fax to:
Department of Business and Professional Regulation
Central Intake Unit – License Maintenance
1940 North Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0783
Fax: 850.922.2918
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND EXAMINATION INFORMATION
- What is the minimum education required for architect examination or licensure?
Florida requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture accredited by the National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB) or a professional degree from an approved program of study of five years or more. NAAB is the accrediting board for all architecture schools in the United States as well as some Canadian schools. You can contact NAAB at www.NAAB.org or 202.783.2007.
- Where do I register my internship experience?
You must enroll in the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Intern Development Program (IDP). NCARB completes an assessment of your experience, which equates to value units. You must complete one year (235 value units) of IDP for examination eligibility. You may contact NCARB at www.NCARB.org or call 202.783.6500 to enroll in IDP.
- What examination is required for Florida architect licensure?
You must take and pass the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE). For test dates and locations visit the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards’ (NCARB) web site at www.NCARB.org or contact them at 202.783.6500.
- What application do I submit for approval to begin taking the ARE and receive a Florida license? You must complete and submit the architecture examination application. You must meet the minimum education and experience requirements to begin testing. You must be enrolled in the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Intern Development Program (IDP). You can contact NCARB at www.NCARB.org or call 202.783.6500 to enroll in IDP.
Requirements for examination:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or a professional degree from an approval program of study of five years or more
- Minimum of 235 value units completed in the NCARB IDP
- Exam applicant’s name must be posted on the early ARE eligibility list on NCARB’s web page (the board will verify electronically)
- Complete the application and submit the non-refundable fee of $60.00.
Foreign education applicants must have an education evaluation performed by NCARB. NCARB and NAAB will determine if the education is equivalent to the NAAB degree. If the foreign education is equivalent, NCARB will notify the board in writing. If the foreign education is not equivalent, the application may be required to complete additional education.
Requirements for licensure:
- Passage of ARE
- Proof of completion of the NCARB IDP by the NCARB council record, a total of 700 value units for bachelor’s degree or 465 value units for master’s degree (this total includes the initial 235 value units)
The board requires applicants with a master’s degree to complete 465 value units of the NCARB IDP. The board does not designate what categories of IDP must be complete for licensure in Florida. NCARB must validate to Florida through a record transmittal that 465 value units are complete for licensure. You must complete NCARB’s IDP category requirements to receive NCARB certification.
You can locate the architecture examination application at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Apply for a License.
- Once I have been approved by the board to take the Architecture Registration Examination (ARE), when and where can I take the examination?
The ARE is computerized and can be taken every day. Once you are approved as eligible to take the examination, you will receive an authorization package from Prometric that will provide location information. The exams are administered at Prometric test centers. There are several locations in Florida and throughout the United States. You may pick the one that is closest to you.
- Who is Prometric and how can I contact them?
Prometric is the examination administration branch of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Architectural Registration Examination (ARE) Program and can be reached at www.NCARB.org or call 1.800.896.2272.
- Can I take the examination in another state and still be considered a Florida candidate?
Yes. Your examination results will be sent to Florida, because that is your approval state.
- How long does it take for me to receive my examination results?
Your examination results are prepared by NCARB ARE Program and mailed to the Florida board office. Once the grades are received from NCARB ARE Program, the board office mails them to you within 24 hours of receipt. It can take four to six weeks for the board office to receive the grades from NCARB ARE Program. Grades are mailed to the last known address provided to NCARB ARE Operations. If you have an address change, please notify the NCARB ARE Program and the board office.
Candidates that fail the exam should contact Prometric to reschedule. You are not required to reapply through the department.
Examination grades will not be provided by telephone.
- Where can I obtain the Architecture Registration Examination application?
The department’s Architecture Registration Examination application can be obtained online at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Apply for a License.
- How do I receive my license once I have completed all parts of the exam?
You must provide proof of completing the Intern Development Program (IDP) before you will be licensed. Although you only need 235 value units to begin taking the test, you need 700 value units to be licensed with a Bachelors of Architecture degree. If you have a Master’s of Architecture degree, you need 465 value units to complete IDP. Proof of completing IDP must come directly to the department from the National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB).
- I have taken and passed the ARE and completed my internship but I am not licensed in any state. What application do I submit?
You must complete and submit the architecture endorsement application. Please refer to the Licensure Information Section.

NCARB will forward your completed department application with the $90.00 fee and your council record in one packet to the department.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or a professional degree from an approved program of study of five years or more, if licensed in another state or jurisdiction prior to June 30, 1984 this requirement does not apply

You can locate the Practical Experience Form (IDP Equivalency) form at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Apply for a License.
- I am an architect from a foreign country. What do I need to do in order to become licensed in Florida?
Florida does not recognize licensure outside of the country; therefore, you must apply as if you did not have a license. First you would need to have your foreign education evaluated to see if it is the equivalent of at least a Bachelor of Architecture degree in the United States. You can contact the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) to have your education equivalency performed and experience evaluated in accordance to the NCARB Intern Development Program (IDP). You must have at least one year, which is 235 value units of this program, in order to begin taking the exam. You may contact NCARB at 202.783.6500 or at www.NCARB.org.
Upon completion of the NCARB education and experience evaluation complete the department’s examination application to begin testing or the NCARB endorsement application if you have taken the Architectural Registration Examination (ARE).
If you are licensed in another state and have taken the ARE you still need to have an education equivalency performed by the NCARB.
You can locate the examination and endorsement applications at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Apply for a License.
- I do not have any education; however I do have 30+ years of architectural experience. Can I be licensed on experience alone? Does Florida offer licensure via grandfathering or grandparenting?
No. You must meet all of the educational, experience and examination requirements as set forth by the examination or endorsement applications.
- I obtained my National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) certification by the Broadly Experience Architect (BEA) provision. Can I obtain Florida licensure?
No. Florida does not recognize the Broadly Experience Architect (BEA) program administered by NCARB. The only exception to this requirement is if the applicant is licensed in another state prior to June 30, 1984 and holds a valid NCARB certificate.
- If I was once licensed in Florida and my license is now null and void, can I have it reinstated?Yes. There is an application that allows an individual to apply for reinstatement of a null and void license based on illness or undue hardship. The applicant must provide documentation of the hardship and a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education for each biennium the license was void.
If you do not qualify for reinstatement of the null and void license, then you must apply by endorsement.

- If I have a licensed architecture firm, can I obtain a license to do interior design without having a licensed designer work for the firm?

- My license is null and void. Can I reactivate or reinstate my license?
Once a license is placed in null and void status, the only thing that you can do is reapply to the department for licensure by endorsement. Completing a reactivation or renewal application will not regain licensure.
If you qualify you may apply for reinstatement based on a hardship.
You can locate the application for reinstatement of null and void license due to illness or unusual hardship at www.MyFloridaLicense.com > Apply for a License.
