Certification is required to perform the duties of a building code administrator.

Application Requirements:

  • ENDORSEMENT: Endorsement is licensure of individuals who have already taken and passed a technical examination similar to the technical examination required in Florida. You will be required to take and pass the Florida principles and practice examination if you are approved by the board. For more information regarding the principles and practice examination, please review the BCAIB P&P Examination Candidate Information Booklet.

  • AGE: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be of good moral character.
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: You must comply with one of the following eligibility requirements:
    a) Demonstrates ten (10) years combined experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered or certified contractor, or construction superintendent, with at least five (5) years of such experience in supervisory positions;
    or
    b) Demonstrates a combination of post-secondary education in the field of construction or related field, no more than five (5) years being applied, and experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered or certified contractor, or construction superintendent which totals ten (10) years, with at least five (5) years of such total being experience in supervisory positions. The applicant must also have completed a board-approved course consisting of at least 20 hours, but not more than 30 hours, of instruction in state laws, rules, and ethics relating to the professional standards of practice, duties and responsibilities of a certificateholder.

    If you are licensed by the Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board, you have maintained an active license, continuous employment and continuing education, you will not be required to take the Florida Principles and Practice examination again in order to receive a license or add an additional category of licensure. If post-secondary education is going to be used to qualify for licensure, official transcripts must be included with the application.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE FORM: Work experience detail provided in applications is often too general and is missing hands-on experience. The person certifying your experience should be specific when explaining your duties and actual hands-on experience. In order to process your application more quickly, and not have your application returned to you, describe work experience in detail, including hands-on, supervisory or management responsibilities.

  • EXAMINATION: Applicants must ensure that they completed a technical examination comparable to the technical examination administered to Florida candidates. Endorsement applicants are required to take the Florida principles and practice examination if their application is approved by the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board. For more information regarding the Florida principles and practice examination, please review the BCAIB P&P Examination Candidate Information Booklet.
  • FEES: Government employees should submit $5 per category, and non-government employees should submit $105 per category. If you are a non-government employee and you have already passed the Florida principles and practice examination, you should submit $55 per category. All payments should be made payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
