Deputy Pilot Certificate by Examination (BOPC 1)

Deputy pilots are licensed to bring vessels in and out of Florida ports. Deputy pilots must successfully complete a port-specific training program before they can be considered for the state pilot examination. Individuals who seek to become licensed as a deputy pilot in a Florida port which has declared a deputy pilot opening must complete this application.

Application Requirements:
 
  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Applicants for licensure by examination must be at least 21 years of age, have successfully completed 12 formal years of education, be of good physical and mental health, and have required maritime experience satisfactory to the Board of Pilot Commissioners as set forth in the application. Deputy pilot applications for examination must only be submitted when a port has declared an opening for a deputy pilot.

  • EXAMINATION: Applicant must take and pass the deputy pilot examination to be considered for an opening. For more information regarding the examination, please review the Deputy Pilot Candidate Information Booklet.

  • PHYSICAL EXAM: The Merchant Mariner Physical Examination Report must be submitted with the application.
  • DRUG TESTING: A current drug test or documentation verifying that the applicant has been subject to a random drug testing program for the last 6 months must be submitted with the application.

  • FEE: Pay the required fee as provided in the application. If applying online, you can pay with a credit card or electronic check. If mailing your application, please include a check payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
